Ice Cube (born O’Shea Jackson) has a ton to be grateful for nowadays.
The 46-year-old rap mogul/film maker/actor is fresh off the heels of another super successful movie debut. The “Straight Outta Compton” biopic about his life and fellow NWA members (Eazy E, Dr. Dre, MC Ren, & DJ Yella) shattered the box office and brought back urban black film.
Released August 14th, the meteoric movie covers a golden era in hip hop history. It stayed number one on the best-seller list for three weeks in a row. The film has surpassed the $100 million dollar mark after just 18 days in theaters.
Not only is his career as a black entertainment icon is going strong, his marriage seems to be holding up better than ever!
The “Friday” and “Barbershop” film maker recently stopped by TheRealRickeySmiley.com to talk to his comedian friend and company about all the recent success, as well as the woman who has been at is side the whole time during his rise to fame.
Ice Cube has always represented his wife, Kim Woodruff-Jackson when talking about his storied career. In fact, the movie “Straight Outta Compton,” includes a little bit of the love story about Ice Cube and his high school sweetheart Kim.
“I still get the butterflies when I see her. It’s a true partnership,” Cube said. “I respect my wife and she respects me,” he continued. The former NWA rhyme writer also shared what he wants to see in the future of his marriage.
“I still want her to look at me and say, ‘this is the man I still want to be with, ‘ ” he added. “Straight Outta Compton” also stars the couple’s 24-year-old son O’Shea Jackson Jr. The younger Jackson portrays his father in the film and gives an awesome performance.
Not only has Cube’s son debuted on the big screen but he’s also a rapper in is own right. O’Shea Jr. appeared on his father’s album “I Am the West” rapping under the moniker OMG. He appears on two tracks on the 2010 LP, which debuted in the Billboard Top 25 album charts during its first week of release.
O’Shea Jr. is proof of what can happen when a successful black man and woman stick together to raise their children. The couple also has another son named Darryl who is a rapper as well.
Darryl raps under the stage name Doughboy, which is the name of the character his father portrayed in his debut film “Boyz In the Hood.”
Building a successful marriage and family is hard enough as an average black couple in a country where our race deals with many historic social problems. Being a black couple in Hollywood is even more challenging.
Being under the public microscope as a celebrity couple is very complicated. Many high-profile couples in entertainment don’t last. The divorce rate for celebrities is even higher than it is for average people.
But Ice Cube and his wife Kim have defied those odds. They’ve been married for 23-years and have been through all the highs and lows. That is quite an accomplishment in the uncertain world of entertainment.
Ice Cube also gave a few details to Rickey Smiley about what keeps his marriage going strong. Here is a look at the quotes from Smiley’s blog on the Ice Cube interview:
- He gets up pretty early in the morning, but he doesn’t rush straight to work. “I like to hang out with my wife, talk about things, get some coffee, you know?”
- Sometimes he eats the dinner she made last night, for breakfast in the morning. “She’s the best cook” he says, which is why he doesn’t do it, because he isn’t so great at it.
- Cube says they’re also a great partnership. He puts it this way: “It’ll be like if she went to make a record. We just both do what we’re best at.”
- He advises staying on your P’s and Q’s and going for what you know.
Ice Cube has always been my favorite rapper. His controversial start in an iconic rap group came at a time when the Los Angeles area was dealing with much crime and police brutality. He then flipped his career as a rap artist into a film catalog that is like no other rapper/actor’s.
On top of that, he’s still down with the woman who has been there through it all. That is SO sexy. Most dudes abandon the woman who was there before the success came along. They end up with some trendy girl who knows nothing about his struggle. Such lames.. Ain’t nothing like a real king who holds down his queen.
