Having a satisfying sex life is usually a key piece to maintaining a good relationship for both men and women.
But can you have too much of a good thing?
How often should couples be getting it on per week to maintain a happy relationship?
We think we’ve found the answer.
Social Psychology and Personal Science recently published a study with some really interesting data about how often love birds should be making love to maintain a happy relationship.
If you’re really serious about making your love last forever, science suggests that you should be doing the deed AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK.
The sample size for this study was pretty significant. According to reports 25,510 U.S. respondents participated, and for these couples the same nearly always rang true: Couples who were making love more often generally stayed together longer and experienced more meaningful relationships.
However, there is a happiness cutoff point…
Anything more than once per week didn’t really affect either partner’s happiness. The increased amount didn’t increase relationship satisfaction.
The lead researcher for this study was Amy Muise. She is a social psychologist at the University of Toronto Mississauga.
Amy and her team actually did a radio interview to talk about the results of their juicy study and the experience they went through while conducting it.
This showed a linear association between sex and happiness up to a frequency of once a week, but at higher frequencies there is no longer an association. Therefore it is not necessary, on average, for couples to aim to engage in sex as frequently as possible.
The results are pretty clear: Sex CAN make you happier in your relationship, but there is no real change between doing it once a week and doing it 100 times a week.
Have fun with that ladies and gentlemen!
